Jihad in the sense of territorial expansion has always been a central aspect of Muslim life. That's how Muslims came to rule much of the Arabian Peninsula by the time of the Prophet Muhammad's death in 632. It's how, a century later, Muslims had conquered a region from Afghanistan to Spain. Subsequently, jihad spurred and justified Muslim conquests of such territories as India, Sudan, Anatolia, and the Balkans. राज्य क्षेत्र के विस्तार के संबंध में जिहाद मुस्लिम जीवन का प्रमुख अंग रहा है.इसी कारण सन् 632 में मोहम्मद की मृत्यु के समय तक मुसलमान अरब प्रायद्वीप के बहुत बड़े क्षेत्र पर आधिपत्य स्थापित कर सके थे .इसी भाव के कारण मोहम्मद की मृत्यु की एक शताब्दी के पश्चात् उन्होंने अपगानिस्तान से स्पेन तक का क्षेत्र जीत लिया था .इसके बाद जिहाद ने मुसलमानों को भारत , सूडान , अनातोलिया और बाल्कन जैसे क्षेत्रों को जीतने के लिए प्रेरित किया .
